David Cheatham

I enjoy the full process of painting.  From the construction of the canvas to framing the finished piece and all that is in-between.  I feel that completing each part of the process is a small accomplishment in the overall development of the work.  Creating the finished work is my objective but I have great satisfaction in its progression.

While reviewing photographs that I have taken I am able to pick out sections that are of good composition to be the basis of my paintings. The realistic manner of my painting lends itself to certain compositions that I keep in mind as I take the photographs.  When painting from life, I visually frame the section of my view in order to achieve the best arrangement of values and shapes.  Colors are used to represent texture rather than thick paint allowing me to layer highlights and shadows as needed.

My works are a combination of well-developed composition and frequently a different take on the size of the canvas.  Different sized canvases allow me to create interesting paintings with an added benefit of an unusual eye catching element.
